I sat in church
and heard the priest recite the Lenten rules.
Meatless Fridays. Fasting Wednesdays,
for those between age 18-59 – and the infirm.
When I was young, my impression was
these obligations were designed,
so the old would not die by penance.
I had visions of emaciated elders
fainting in the church foyer.
Now at age 60, I have a Lenten pass.
